― Family Record states that Emily (who was commonly referred to as “Emma” or “Emmy”) and M.Y. were married on November 2, 1904, although the date used above is from their Marriage Certificate. ― His second wife, Emily Jane Whobrey Armes Vincent, brought four children to the family, in addition to those M.Y. had from an earlier marriage and those he and Emma had together. Between Emma and M.Y., there were 17 children. Emma's children from her first marriage were: + Dessie C. Armes (1895 – 1925) + Estel E. Armes (1897 – UNK) + + Zelma Armes Vincent (1901 – 1969) ― Family Record says that
he was a farmer and had a "common" education. It also says
that he was a General Baptist minister for many years and helped organize
several churches in Edmonson and ― Bonnie Lillian Vincent Hazelip
stated that M.Y. preached at ― Oral History (note 2) states that (a) he was over six feet tall, was of a slim build, and "walked like an Indian, like he was always about to throw a tomahawk" at you and (b) he was gruff around children and didn't know how to relate to children in any way other than as if they were adults. ― Oral History (note 3) states that he reported [friends or relatives] to the federal authorities when he determined they were running a still. ― Oral History (note 4) states that he had a booming voice and hollered after his son in front of the entire Bee Spring area about certain things his son had been up to. His son simply kept his head down and quickened his pace to get out of earshot and out of town, but M.Y. had no embarrassment in making a scene over his son. ― Victoria Jean Hazelip Bratcher’s memory from her youth is of M.Y. sitting on the front porch of his house with a long beard and his head resting on his hands clasped over the top of a wooden cane. ― M.Y.’s daughter, Bonnie Lillian Vincent Hazelip, recounted a story where Nancy Meredith Vincent came to a baptizing being conducted by M.Y. Vincent and brought a pair of thick socks so that M.Y. could walk on the rocks more easily. (Oral History Note 12.) |

― Elasta Jane Vincent, M.Y.’s baby daughter, said that M.Y. died at his home during the night. She said it was around midnight, although his Death Certificate states that he died at 9:30 p.m. ― Elasta also stated that she was with him when he died, and that everyone had been sitting up with him. ― Elasta said he would pray to the Lord to heal him, but eventually he told God that he would not ask any longer. ― M.Y.’s Death Certificate states that he died at 9:30 p.m. after a two-week bout of “influenzia.” The Death Certificate also states that M.Y. had “Chronic Pulmonary T. B.,” meaning that he had pulmonary tuberculosis. |
